We Are the Layers: A Reflection on Interconnected Lives

This mixed media artwork invites reflection on the unseen threads that connect all living things. Created with upcycled cotton string once used to bind printed materials, the piece transforms an ordinary object of transport into a quiet meditation on unity and renewal. Twenty strands, gently positioned across the surface, create a rhythmic flow that echoes both the layers of the earth and the layers of a life unfolding.

Soft transitions of color, including pale blues, sand tones, muted greens, and hints of gold, suggest the meeting of sky and substance, the balance between what is above and what is within. Across the horizontal bands, subtle dots, circles, and curved markings evoke the pulse of time and the movement of memory, giving a sense of quiet expansion. The knots and loops within the strings speak to the points of connection where experiences meet, where tension becomes meaning, and where continuity emerges from change.

Through every layer reflects the shared essence of existence. It honors how life builds upon itself through adaptation, remembrance, and imagination. Each thread becomes both an individual story and a collective one, woven together into the fabric of creation. The work reminds us that even in stillness we are part of something greater, always forming and always connected.
